SAN ANTONIO, MARCH 14th to 17th

Since we couldn't get into a state park until Spring Break was over, we headed to a favorite city to restock the larder. It was fascinating to drive from Del Rio, which is still in the desert, to San Antonio the South Texas Plains, at the edge of the Edwards Plateau. The landscape gradually changed, sometimes with characteristics of both in one spot. We decided to see if Lackland AFB had a space for us since it operated on a first come, first served principle. We were in luck! We got a partial hook-up site right away and the next day were offered one with full hook-ups, including cable.

The car battery had given out at Seminole Canyon and we nursed it along, jump starting off the camper when necessary, to get to San Antonio. The Firestone Service Station on base replaced the battery and we thought we were good to go. The next day, we had a flat tire. We pumped it up to 40psi and dashed across town to a Goodyear Store. They repaired it with a clever little thing that served as both a patch and a plug. Darn! A chunk of time had been spent on repairs when we'd rather be in a museum.

Half the night, on every Air Force base where we stay, we listen to the jets flying over. We call it The Sound of Freedom. It's a training base so there were lots of flights. There were well over fifty planes on display, many scattered over the base.

We think our friend Linda P worked on this model.

Our campsite with full hook-ups, including cable, twenty steps away from FREE laundry and showers.

We found Twin Sisters in 2009 when we were in San Antonio with Woody and Lucie.  So we had to go back for breakfast.

YUM! Linda thinks they scramble eggs better than anyplace she's ever been. The Sweet Potato Muffin is delicious, too.

We watched these two men practicing fly fishing on the lawn by Twin Sisters and then noticed that there is a store called 'Tackle Box' across from the restaurant.  Fly fishing looks like fun.

Of course a trip to San Antonio would not be complete without food gathering at Central Market, our favorite grocery store in all of Texas. (In all of the WORLD! Linda) The Manager asked Carole not to take pictures inside the store, so this is all you get.  But, if you are ever in San Antonio, check out Central Market.

Emeritus. Linda saw this sign and thought it was a better way to describe a senior care facility, rather than call it Journey's End or Sunset. Texas does some things so graciously!

Eleven days without a Starbucks were over.

  1. Great post!! I love Texas' geography. Austin sort of straddle the "dry line" - far east Austin is noticeably greener than west Austin, which has more scorpions. If I'd have taken more science classes, I would have gotten a job as a geographer.

And Central Market - what a treat! We might retire down there. There just aren't many librarian jobs in mid-sized cities like Austin.

    Have fun in Tejas!
